What this workout does
Ride a new route or roads you do not usually take. The focus is exploring while maintaining a productive aerobic effort.
Holding 65-75% FTP across changing terrain builds the aerobic engine while training you to keep effort steady when the road does not cooperate - a skill that pays off in events. The variable resistance also recruits slightly different muscle patterns than a flat steady ride. Slot it in wherever a standard Zone 2 ride would go.
How to ride it
Indoor / trainer
Pick unfamiliar roads. Ride at 65-75% FTP regardless of terrain. The goal is productive aerobic work - steady upper Zone 2 throughout.
Outside
Point the bike somewhere new and hold 65-75% FTP whatever the road does. Crest hills without surging, keep pedaling on false flats, and let curiosity handle the entertainment.
