Should I Train Hard Today?

Your readiness score answers this in one number — and shows its reasoning. Here's what goes into it, and how to act on green, amber, and red.

Last updated: Jun 2026

The hardest training decision is often the simplest question: should I go hard today, take it easy, or rest? FormBeat answers it with a single readiness score from 0 to 10 — and, just as importantly, it shows you the reasoning behind it.

How the score is built

Readiness blends several signals, each measured relative to your own fitness, so a score of 8 means the same thing whether your fitness is 30 or 90:

Form — how fresh or fatigued you are right now.
Recent load — how heavy your last few days have been.
Variety — whether your training has been monotonous, a known injury and illness risk.
Training pattern — too many hard days in a row, or too many days off.
Recovery from your last hard effort — how long since you went deep.

Reading the colours

Green (roughly 7–10) — you're ready. A good day for intensity or a longer effort.
Amber (roughly 4–7) — train, but keep it moderate. Endurance over intervals.
Red (roughly 0–4) — prioritise recovery. An easy spin or a rest day.

It shows its reasoning

A readiness number you can't see inside is just a black box. That's why FormBeat surfaces the main drivers behind today's score — for example, "you're carrying some fatigue and your last hard session was very recent" — so you can sanity-check the verdict against how you actually feel.

The body has the final say

Readiness is a strong starting point, not a command. It can't see your sleep, your work stress, or how your legs feel on the warm-up. If the score says green but you feel wrecked, trust your body and ease off. Used together, the number and your own judgement beat either one alone.
